History and context


The wine-growing history of Cangas del Narcea and its surroundings dates back to the Middle Ages. When Benedictine monks promoted the cultivation of vines in the region. For centuries, wine production was a key element in the local economy, until the 20th century brought a decline due to industrialisation and depopulation of the rural environment. However, in recent decades, a group of committed producers has worked hard to recover and promote this winemaking tradition, achieving recognition as a Protected Designation of Origin in 2014.

Climate and soils

The Cangas DOP is located in a mountainous area with an Atlantic climate with continental influences. This means that the winters are cold and humid, while the summers are mild, with a marked temperature difference between day and night. This characteristic favors a slow ripening of the grape, which translates into fresh, balanced wines with a well-defined acidity.
The soils of the region are mainly composed of slate and quartzite, with a good drainage capacity. This, together with the altitude of the vineyards, which are usually located between 400 and 700 meters above sea level, provides unique conditions for growing vines.

One of the most unique aspects of the Cangas DOP is the use of native varieties that are little known outside the region. The main red grapes include Carrasquín, Verdejo Negro and Albarín Tinto, while the whites include Albarín Blanco and Moscatel de Grano Menudo. The wines of the Cangas DOP are mainly produced in red and white versions, although rosés and sparkling wines are also produced in smaller quantities. The red wines of Cangas harmonize well with traditional Asturian dishes such as fabada, pote asturiano or game meats. Thanks to their structure and balanced acidity. On the other hand, the whites are an excellent option to accompany seafood, soft cheeses and white fish.
